For the past few years comic books have provided the source material for some of the biggest movies to hit the big screen, and 2016 won't do anything to change that. Long-awaited adaptations like Doctor Strange and Gambit are slated for release. We'll finally get to see Psylocke and Jubilee in an X-Men movie. And Bebop and Rocksteady are going to be in the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! But the biggest fight of the year won't be between a hero and a villain — it'll be between comic imprints Marvel and DC. Marvel's well-established cinematic universe will bring us Captain America: Civil War while DC's universe, still in its infancy, will establish itself with the sure-to-be blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Take a look below at eight of 2016's biggest slated releases for comic book fans.
1. 'Deadpool' (February 12)
The hilarious trailer for this long-awaited adaptation won a standing ovation when it premiered at Comic-Con last summer. The movie's been a passion project for star Ryan Reynolds, who convinced fans he was right for the job when he showed up in a leaked proof-of-concept trailer for the film that led to its eventual greenlight. We have high hopes for the only comic book movie of 2016 that will dare to take itself less serious.
2. 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (March 25)
The most-anticipated movie of the year for DC Comics fans will undoubtedly be the big showdown between comic legends Batman and Superman. The latest trailer revealed the two will team up (with Wonder Woman no less) against the greater threat of Doomsday, a villain who killed Superman in one of the most famous comic book events of the '90s. Word is that by the end of the movie we'll see a fully assembled Justice League for the first time on the big screen.
3. 'Captain America: Civil War' (May 6)
A Marvel movie on the same scale as the Avengers films, Civil War will find Captain America facing off against Avengers teammate Iron Man. The two disagree over a piece of legislation that would require all individuals with powers to register with the government so their activities can be monitored. The events of Age of Ultron set up this giant-sized Cap sequel, which will also introduce Black Panther, who's slated for his own movie in 2018.
4. 'X-Men: Apocalypse' (May 27)
After X-Men: Days of Future Past brought together the two X-Men cinematic timelines, Apocalypse takes us back to the '80s as the X-Men face a threat even stronger than Magneto or Professor X. He's big. He's blue. His name is Apocalypse, and he's the immortal first mutant ever born. Oscar Isaac plays the new villain, but what we're really looking forward to are the introductions of fan favorite characters Jubilee, Psylocke, and a mohawked younger version of Storm.
5. 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows' (June 3)
Fans of the '80s cartoon are excited for the second TMNT movie for two big reasons, and their names are Bebop and Rocksteady. The villainous duo from the animated series will be brought to life in a live action film for the first time in the new film, which will also give us a new take on the Shredder and more nods to the cartoon.
6. 'Suicide Squad' (August 5)
After Batman v Superman fully establishes the DC Cinematic Universe in May, Suicide Squad will color in its dark corners in August. With a tough and gritty adaptation, Suicide Squad will bring together DC Comics villains Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc, and more as they band together to fight an even greater evil. The first trailer also revealed Jared Leto as the all-new Joker, igniting much fan debate over whether he'll be any good.
7. 'Gambit' (Oct. 7)
Comic fans have long complained about Gambit's absence from the X-Men movies, and Channing Tatum has been hard at work behind the scenes to bring the character to life with the respect he deserves. Tatum took on the adaptation as a passion project, but news around its development has been spotty, and it's questionable whether it will actually hit that October release date, or if Tatum will remain attached.
8. 'Doctor Strange' (Nov. 4)
Things will get weird in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Strange makes his way to theaters. Benedict Cumberbatch seems like the perfect actor to play Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme, but we don't yet know much about who he'll be fighting or what the story will be. While Strange's name was dropped in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it's hard to say how, exactly, he'll fit into the universe, but we can't wait to see how it all works out.
