Saoirse Ronan wants you to learn Irish. Or, more specifically, she will assist you and Stephen Colbert in failing miserably to pronounce ridiculous Irish names.
On Tuesday's episode of The Late Show, the Brooklyn star helped Colbert with his Irish accent. The lesson eventually graduated into the correct pronouncement of several baffling Irish names, including Tadhg, Niamh, Oisin, and Caoimhe.
Saoirse, whose name is pronounded "ser-sha" ("like inertia," she said), wasn't so successful in her assistance because, as she put it, "it all makes no sense." But it did make for a heck of an episode, and Irish somehow feels so much more exotic.
The 21-year-old was born in The Bronx of New York, moving back to her parents' home country of Ireland shortly thereafter. To date, she's one of the youngest people to have been nominated for an oscar thanks to her performance in Atonement.
Ronan's most recent project was Brooklyn, a film illustrating the plight of a 1950s-era Irish immigrant who's just landed in the borough. Next up is crime drama Loving Vincent, followed by Michael Mayer's The Seagull.
We're not sure how she'll ever top The Lovely Bones, but we do wish her a four-leaf clover in the upcoming year.
