Whether you are on the side that thinks J.J. Abrams royally screwed up Star Wars: The Force Awakens with his derivative vision, or on the side that thinks his update brought the intergalactic franchise back with a roaring force, one question is on everyone's mind: Who are Rey's parents?
In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey (Daisy Ridley) is introduced as a young, independent scavenger with mysterious origins and a set of impressive skills which include mechanical work and hand-to-hand combat. It's understandable that Rey is so resourceful since she has been taking care of herself on Jakku for years. In the film, Rey also flies the Millennium Falcon without any prior experience, becomes part of the Resistance, and effortlessly taps into The Force.
But what about her past? Is Rey part of a famous Star Wars family? Who are her parents? Here are 3 theories that could possibly answer this nerve-racking mystery.
1. Rey is Luke Skywalker's daughter.

In A New Hope, Luke Skywalker is introduced as a teenager who works on a moisture farm on Tatooine, but unlike Rey, Luke lives with his family (Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru). He is also called to adventure and becomes entangled with the Rebel Alliance. Luke can effortlessly tap into the Force, and it's his lightsaber that calls out to Rey in The Force Awakens. In fact, the lightsaber chooses Rey over Luke's nephew, Kylo Ren. In A New Hope, Luke is also portrayed as a gifted pilot, and by allowing the Force to guide him, he is able to destroy the Death Star. Similarly, in The Force Awakens, Maz Kanata teaches Rey how to feel the Force, and Rey uses this advice to fend off Kylo Ren during their lightsaber duel. In the final scenes of the movie, Rey finds Luke, and he appears to clearly recognize her. In fact, it appears as if he has been waiting for Rey all along.
So if Luke is Rey's father, why did he abandon his daughter to such a difficult life? (After all, Luke's own childhood was extremely hard.)
2. Rey is Han Solo and Leia Organa's daughter.
Walt Disney Studios / Lucasfilm Ltd.
From their first encounter, Rey and Han Solo have a playful and sweet relationship. Both of them know how to fix mechanical issues on the Millennium Falcon, and they definitely give off a father-daughter vibe. Although Han Solo isn't Force-sensitive, Rey's powers could easily be inherited from Leia. In fact, Leia gives Rey a very tender and motherly hug at the end of The Force Awakens. (Really, who didn't cry during this scene?)
However, it's difficult to believe that Han and Leia would never mention having a daughter. Despite Kylo Ren's maniacal ways, his parents never give up hope for his possible redemption, so how could they simply abandon Rey? We also need a very good explanation as to why neither Han, Leia, nor Kylo Ren show any sign of recognition when they meet Rey. In fact, Kylo Ren mocks Rey for looking up to Han Solo as a father figure.
3. Rey belongs to the Kenobi family.
Walt Disney Studios / Lucasfilm Ltd.
Obi-Wan Kenobi could have had a child during his exile and Rey could be a descendent of that child. After all, Rey is naturally good at Jedi mind control. While being held captive on Starkiller Base, she gets a Stormtrooper to release her with minimal effort. Also, when Rey touches Luke's lightsaber, it's Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice that speaks to her.
So if Kylo Ren is the grandson of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, why can't Rey be the granddaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi? Interestingly, if this turns out to be true, Luke Skywalker could train the granddaughter of the man who once trained him.
So what do you think? Hit the comments with your own theories about Rey's parentage.
