Hooray for Hollywood! The industry really set the bar this year with box office smashes like Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant Man, and, perhaps most critically-acclaimed, Mad Max: Fury Road. But what were Zimbio editors' top picks? Check them out below to prep for winter's busy award season!
Editor's Note: These picks were made before Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released. It certainly would have ended up on this list several times.
JJ Duncan (SENIOR EDITOR)
Favorite Movie: Mad Max: Fury Road
Favorite Breakout Star: Maika Monroe
Actor Who Won You Over This Year: Domhnall Gleeson
2015 Book That Deserves the Movie Treatment: Saga (It's a comic book that didn't start in 2015, but it was better than ever this year.)
2016 Movie You're Most Looking Forward to: Captain America: Civil War
Joe Robberson (Senior Associate Editor)
Favorite Movie: Mad Max: Fury Road
Favorite Breakout Star: Alicia Vikander
Actor Who Won You Over This Year: Christopher Abbott
2015 Book That Deserves the Movie Treatment: Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
2016 Movie You're Most Looking Forward to: The Neon Demon and Hail, Caesar!
LANI CONWAY (INTERACTIVES EDITOR)
Favorite Movie: Mad Max: Fury Road, Crimson Peak, Sicario
Favorite Breakout Star: Does The Rock count?
Actor Who Won You Over This Year: Tom Hiddleston (See: here)
2015 Book That Deserves the Movie Treatment: Crippled America by Donald Trump, only because I haven't read a 2015 book and I'd really love to see some of this written insanity made sense of.
2016 Movie You're Most Looking Forward to: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. I loved the first film that much.
Areeba Abid (ASSOCIATE EDITOR)
Favorite Movie: Mad Max: Fury Road and Ex Machina
Favorite Breakout Star: Alicia Vikander
Actor Who Won You Over This Year: Vin Diesel (tentatively)
2015 Book That Deserves the Movie Treatment: Mindy Kaling's Why Not Me?
2016 Movie You're Most Looking Forward to: The Girl on the Train and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
CECILY TROWBRIDGE (ASSOCIATE EDITOR)
Favorite Movie: The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Favorite Breakout Star: Alicia Vikander
Actor Who Won You Over This Year: Armie Hammer
2015 Book That Deserves the Movie Treatment: All the Bright Places
2016 Movie You're Most Looking Forward to: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiars and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. I am not ashamed.
JILL SLATTERY (EDITOR IN CHIEF)
Favorite Movie: Inside Out
Favorite Breakout Star: Chris Pratt, always Chris Pratt.
2015 Book That Deserves the Movie Treatment: The Royal We, by the GoFugYourself team of Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. Romantic, funny, dishy, and smart, the fictionalized version of the courtship of Prince William and Kate Middleton is a delight from start to finish. I can’t wait to watch the inevitable movie version.
2016 Movie You're Most Looking Forward to: The new Ghostbusters (girl power!) and Independence Day Resurgence. I don’t expect the latter to be one of the great movies of our time, but I do expect it to be a rollicking, action-packed good time. I also expect Liam Hemsworth to be shirtless at some point. Please don’t disappoint me, Hollywood.
JOEY SKLADANY (TV EDITOR)
Favorite Movie: Spy. I watched this on a trans-Atlantic flight and frequently woke up the passenger next to me. Laugh-out-loud funny.
Favorite Breakout Star: Amy Schumer. She's just the best. Love a girl who tells it as it is.
Actor Who Won You Over This Year: Chris Pratt. I think this was also my choice last year. Sorry about it. Why is he just so damn hot lovable?
2016 Movie You're Most Looking Forward to: Finding Dory. Anything Ellen DeGeneres touches turns to gold.
