While Jon Snow's fate has been toyed around with, HBO has officially confirmed that one of Ned Stark's sons is returning to Game of Thrones. That's right! After spending a whole year off the hit show, Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) is back for season 6. Bran was last seen in the season 4 finale when he met with the cave-dwelling Three-Eyed Raven in an effort to gain control over his fledgling psychic powers.
Season 6 of Game of Thrones will employ some Inception-like narrative arcs to illustrate certain parts of Westeros history that many fans thought they would never see. The idea to fast-forward through a majority of Bran's psychic training with the Three-Eyed Raven was meticulously planned out by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
“When I first heard the news Dan and David wanted to have a chat with me, I was like, ‘Oh no!’” recalled Wright. “Usually that’s to tell you [your character is] dead. So comparatively, missing a season was like, ‘phew!’” Since we last saw him, the 16-year-old actor cut his hair and is almost six feet tall now.
“And they’re exactly right,” he continued. “I would have just been sitting in a cave going, ‘Oh, I can nearly do it now.’”
After season 4, the Three-Eyed Raven was recast and is now portrayed by legendary actor Max von Sydow (The Exorcist). In fact, Sydow's discernible voice was used to narrate the season 6 teaser trailer.
“There are certain lines that you think are almost fillers, like, ‘He’s over there,’ but when Max von Sydow says them, he can make it sound like it’s the most important news you’ve ever heard,” Wright said about his co-star.
Although Wright was not allowed to share specific details about Bran's return, it was evident that the forthcoming season will be a game-changer for his character. When asked about his reactions to the season 6 scripts, the young actor adorably replied: “Oh! That’s the best scene I’ve ever done! . . . Oh! That scene is even better!
“Previously Bran’s seen tiny glimpses of future or past but never has he been very much in control in the situation,” said Wright. “Now we’re given looks into very important events in the past, present and future of this world and Bran is beginning to piece them together like a detective, almost as if he’s watching the show. Equally, he’s now discovering how crucial he could be in the Great War. It’s quite Inception-y.” Game of Thrones has largely avoided flashbacks in prior seasons, so this is definitely exciting news.
