Star Wars: The Force Awakens' original title was much darker than its galvanizing successor, according to Lucasfilm's Pablo Hidalgo.
In a Twitter conversation, Hidalgo revealed the film's initially planned name, stating that the box office mega-giant was first titled "the same as an old novel."
"Thankfully it changed," he continued. "With so many books, it's inevitable."
When asked what that name was, Hidalgo revealed that it was "Shadow (singular) of the Empire for a while:"
That's right. Episode VII would have been Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire.
Though the title is a big deviation from the one we now know, it likely wouldn't have done much to minimize the film's massive success. To date, Force has grossed more than $1 billion — and that's without China, where the movie releases January 9.
Hidalgo seemed to be glad the name was changed, but we're curious: what do you think?
